The Perfect Ubud Day Trip Itinerary (That Most Tourists Miss)

Ubud is one of the most visited places in Bali, and for good reason. Rice terraces, ancient temples, jungle waterfalls, and world-class food all within reach of one another. But if you’re following the same itinerary as everyone else, you’re missing the best of it.

This guide lays out a perfect one-day Ubud itinerary built around the experiences that are actually special, including a hidden gem swing spot above the Ayung River that most tourists walk right past on their way to the crowded parks.

Whether you’re staying in Ubud, driving up from Seminyak, or doing a full Bali day trip, this plan gives you a day you’ll genuinely never forget.

Start Your Day: Campuhan Ridge Walk at Sunrise

Time: 6:00 – 7:30 AM

The Campuhan Ridge Walk is one of the only places in Ubud where you can completely escape the traffic and the noise. A narrow trail follows the ridge above the Wos River, through swaying grasslands and tropical jungle. At sunrise, the light is golden, the air is cool, and you’ll often have the trail almost entirely to yourself.

The walk is about 3.5 km there and back from the Ubud Art Market — flat enough for most fitness levels, and genuinely beautiful the entire way.

Practical tips:

  • Start no later than 6:30 AM to catch the light and beat the heat
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the path has some uneven sections
  • Bring water; there’s a café (Karsa Café) at the far end if you need a rest

After the ridge walk, head back into Ubud town for breakfast before your morning adventure.

Mid-Morning: Giant Jungle Swing at Bali Desa Swing

Time: 8:30 – 10:30 AM 📍 Bongkasa village, ~20 minutes from Ubud

This is the one most Ubud itineraries skip, and it shouldn’t be.

While the famous swing parks near Tegalalang get incredibly crowded by midday, Bali Desa Swing in Bongkasa village offers something far more special: a giant jungle swing perched directly above the Ayung River valley, one of Bali’s most dramatic natural landscapes. Lush green hills, the winding river below, the Bongkasa countryside stretching to the horizon, there’s no constructed backdrop here, just pure Bali.

The experience is intimate and unhurried. The staff are genuinely wonderful, they’ll help you pose, take photos on your own phone, and make sure you come away with images that look like they belong in a travel magazine. There are multiple photo spots across the property too: bird nests, a boat platform, and riverside lookouts that are all worth exploring.

Arriving around 8:30–9 AM means the morning light is ideal for photos, it’s still cool and comfortable, and you’ll have the place more to yourself than if you arrived later.

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours here — you won’t want to rush it.

Outfit tip: Wear something lightweight and flowy, a dress in white, yellow, or pastels photographs beautifully against the jungle green. Bring a change of clothes if you want variety in your shots and they also have plenty of dress collection available for rent.

Late Morning: Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Time: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM 📍 ~15 minutes from Bongkasa, north of Ubud

Tegalalang is iconic for a reason. The UNESCO-listed rice terraces cascade down the hillside in extraordinary layers, with palms and jungle framing every angle. Arrive just before midday and you’ll still get good light and by walking slightly off the main tourist path, you can find quieter sections to explore and photograph.

The terraces are best visited before 10 AM for the quietest experience, but if you’ve spent your morning at Bali Desa Swing, arriving around 11 AM still gives you a good visit before the full midday rush.

There are several cafés along the ridge overlooking the terraces — perfect for a coffee or cold drink before lunch.

Lunch: Warung in Ubud Town

Time: 12:30 – 2:00 PM

By now you’ve earned a proper meal. Head back into Ubud town for lunch at one of the excellent warungs in the center. Ubud has one of the best food scenes in Bali,  traditional Indonesian cooking at very local prices, right alongside more upscale restaurants if you prefer.

What to try:

  • Nasi campur — Bali’s classic mixed rice dish with small portions of vegetables, satay, and sambal
  • Bebek betutu — slow-cooked duck in Balinese spices, a local specialty
  • Fresh young coconut — the perfect cold drink after a warm morning

Afternoon: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Time: 2:30 – 4:00 PM 📍 Central Ubud, walkable from the Art Market

The Sacred Monkey Forest is home to over 1,200 long-tailed macaques living freely across 27 acres of ancient temple grounds. It’s one of Ubud’s most famous attractions, and with good reason, the combination of cheeky monkeys and centuries-old stone temples draped in jungle is unlike anything else.

Visiting in the afternoon means you’ll catch the forest in its calmer hours, the macaques are most active in the morning and late afternoon. Keep your bags zipped, don’t bring food, and follow the staff instructions for a safe and entertaining visit.

Entrance: IDR 80,000 on weekdays / IDR 100,000 on weekends. Open 9 AM – 5 PM daily.

Late Afternoon: Ubud Art Market & Palace

Time: 4:00 – 5:30 PM 📍 Jalan Raya Ubud, central Ubud

As the afternoon cools slightly, the Ubud Art Market comes alive with color. This is the best place to pick up handmade Balinese souvenirs, woodcarvings, rattan bags, silk scarves, painted ceramics, and batik textiles. Bargaining is very much expected, so enjoy the process.

Right across the street, Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Agung) is free to enter and worth a short visit. The Balinese stone carvings and traditional pavilions are beautifully preserved, and the late afternoon light makes for excellent photos here too.

Sunset & Dinner: Ubud's Best Views

Time: 5:30 PM onwards

Ubud doesn’t have beach sunsets, but it has something arguably more beautiful: jungle valley sunsets. Head to one of the many cliff-edge restaurants or rice terrace cafés on the outskirts of town for golden hour drinks with a view.

After sunset, linger over dinner in Ubud town. The restaurant scene here ranges from cheap and delicious warung meals to world-class tasting menus, whatever your budget, you’ll eat very well.

How to Get Around on Your Ubud Day Trip

Private driver (recommended): A private driver for the day costs around IDR 700,000–900,000 (roughly $45–$60 USD) and covers all travel between stops with zero stress. Most hotels and villas in Bali can arrange this for you, or contact Bali Desa Swing on WhatsApp, our team can help connect you with a trusted local driver.

Scooter rental: For confident riders, renting a scooter gives you maximum flexibility. Ubud traffic can be intense during peak hours, so factor that into your timing.

Grab app: Bali’s ride-hailing app works well for individual trips between central Ubud locations, though it’s less practical for outlying areas like Bongkasa.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Day

Book Bali Desa Swing in advance. Especially during peak months (July, August, December), it’s worth confirming your visit ahead of time. A quick WhatsApp message is all it takes.

Hire a driver for the full day. The distance between Bongkasa, Tegalalang, and Ubud town means having your own driver takes all the stress out of transitions and lets you stay longer at each spot.

Start early. The best light, the coolest temperatures, and the smallest crowds all happen before 10 AM. An early start to the day means you see more and enjoy it more.

Wear layers. Mornings on the ridge walk can be slightly breezy; midday is warm. Lightweight layers and sun protection are your friends.

Respect local customs. Many of the sites on this itinerary, particularly the Monkey Forest temples are sacred spaces. Dress modestly (sarongs are available to borrow at temple entrances), speak quietly, and follow all posted instructions.
